An honest self-examination will show whether you already have a healthy pattern of sleep or if you are experiencing sleep debt.

The following points are what experts generally agree on as signs of a healthy sleeper:

  • You don’t need to resort to drugs, nor are you fighting restlessness or anxiety.

  • You rarely wake up in the middle of the night. If you do, you return to sleep without a problem.

  • You wake up approximately the same time each morning and without the aid of an alarm clock.

  • Once you are awake, you feel awake and relatively alert all day.

On the following page you will find a chart of the 5 stages of sleep durning a night of healthy sleeping.
